Emphasis of this course is on the proper setup and operation of Vertical Manual Milling Machines. The course includes Safety Considerations, Precision Measuring Instruments, Details of Manual Milling Machine Features, and Set Up of Manual Milling Machines. Accepted Milling Practices are learned, including Milling Tool Selection and Use, Calculation of Surface Speed, Feed Rate and Part Orientation, and Work Holding Requirements. Detailed instruction is provided in understanding details typically found on engineering drawings of milled components. Orthographic Projection, Basic Symbols and Notation, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing are covered. Use of calipers and micrometers is reinforced. Drilling, threading, tapping and reaming skills are utilized. Use and understanding of the Machinist Handbook is continued. Completion of course requires the completion of a project part that complies to the tolerancing required on the project engineering drawing and passing associated knowledge test. This earns the student a NIMS Machining Credential.
The prerequisites for this class are: Job Planning, Benchwork & Layout and Measurement Materials & Safety.
