As more people transition to remote working, being able to switch their gears to “meeting mode” and then offer fully-present contributions to virtual work meetings does not happen easily. In addition, remote teams often find it challenging to build or sustain existing rapport with one another. As a result, virtual meetings may struggle to encourage creativity and problem solving when your team members are dispersed and now rarely, if ever, get to meet face-to-face. A virtual ice breaker is a simple approach to get everyone warmed up for a meeting, get conversations flowing, break down barriers or shyness associated with being “online,” energize a meeting, and help team members learn more about each other. This session will explain the definition of a virtual icebreaker, when to use them, and illustrate several examples.
