New Pathways: Manual Milling Skills (M1) - NIMS - FF

Students have 20 weeks to complete the program.
 

Manual Milling 1 is approximately 12 hours per week for six weeks. The emphasis of this course is on the proper setup and operation of Vertical Manual Milling Machines. The course includes Safety Considerations, Precision Measuring Instruments, Details of Manual Milling Machine Features, Set-Up of Manual Milling Machines. Accepted Milling Practices are taught including Milling Tool Selection and Use, Calculation of Surface Speed, Feed Rate and Part Orientation, and Work Holding Requirements. Detailed instruction is provided in understanding the specifics typically found on engineer­ing drawings of milled components. Orthographic Projection, Basic Symbols and Notation, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing are also covered. The use of calipers and micrometers is reinforced. Drilling, threading, tapping and reaming skills are utilized. All instruction is taught with the use and understanding of the Machinist Handbook. Completion of course requires the creation of a project part that complies to the tolerancing required on the project engineering drawing and passing associated knowledge exam. This will allow student to earn the NIMS Machining Credential.

The prerequisites for this class are:  Job Planning, Benchwork & Layout and Measurement, Materials & Safety.
