Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP)

Individuals in these roles provide collaborative behavioral health services to adults and/or youth under appropriate supervision (for trainees) or within their professional role (for QMHPs). Services may include assisting with assessments, implementing treatment plans, skill-building, crisis intervention, case management, and coordination with families and other service providers. Practice occurs within approved agencies or organizations and aligns with state regulations, ethical standards, and interdisciplinary care models.

Upon successful completion (and completion of the required hours for a Behavioral Health Technician), students who are enrolled in a bachelor's degree program can register as a Qualified Mental Health Professional-Trainee through the Virginia Board of Counseling.  Students who have a bachelor's degree and have completed the required 1500 hours of supervised, direct experience can register as a Qualified Mental Health Professional.
